In development at UC Irvine and the Hollywood Fringe

HYPERBOLE: origins has been undergoing much development over the past few months. It began life as The Rogues' took up residency in a development and education workshop with students from University of California Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts. A grand experiment in the first steps of what will become the next Hyperbole installment, the residency was a puppet and mask 'boot camp' for participants. Taking place over two weeks at the UCI campus, Rogues and students gathered to collaborate and create, learn & teach puppet and mask techniques, and take the first steps toward building a new production. At the conclusion of two weeks, students had built masks, created props, puppets and set pieces, and had brought several performance pieces to life, all of which was shared with small preview audiences on Thursday June 3rd and Friday June 4th.

At the HYPERBOLE: origins UC Irvine Workshop

It was an extraordinary experience for both Rogues and students alike!

"I'm so fortunate to have worked with the Rogue Artists!" Katie Montoya, a UC Irvine student, said, "Their imagination and innovation on the stage is like nothing I've seen before. This process taught me that anything is possible with the collaboration of a dedicated ensemble. The Rogue Artists exposed me new and exciting ways of storytelling, and I will never forget their passion and enthusiasm."

Following the workshop performances at UC Irvine, The Rogues took the production to the first ever Hollywood Fringe Festival, performing two shows at the Art|Works Theatre on Theater Row in one marathon day. The Hollywood Fringe performance featured some further developed sets and mask design, and has given the Rogues a running start heading into the full production of HYPERBOLE: origins this fall.

Special preview performances announced

We're super excited to announce the first public incarnation of HYPERBOLE: origins. Rogue Artists Ensemble will present a very special public preview of our latest project, to be unveiled first at the University of California, Irvine, with a follow up performance as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival at the Art|Works Theatre in Hollywood.

The show won't quite be like anything you've ever seen before. A live music video, the show will explore all kinds of origins, from the mythic to the mundane, told with mask, movement, and an incredibly eclectic musical soundtrack we've been assembling from all over the world. We'll be exploring some of man's oldest stories, as only the Rogues could.

The show is an interactive, collaborative undertaking, incorporating elements that we've gathered on our own and that have been submitted to us through our website, www.whatistheorigin.com. It's theater as theater has never quite been created before! And we're not done yet. By attending one of our special preview performances, you, our most exuberant supporters, will get a chance to provide critcal feedback to help shape the future of what will be an incredibly exciting performance event.

The dates and times:
June 3rd and 4th, University of California, Irvine campus, 8 pm
June 20th, Art|Works Theater, Hollywood, CA, 4 pm and 8 pm

The full production will be coming to Los Angeles in the fall. We'll be announcing the details incredibly soon.

Musician Page and More Submissions

The submissions are rolling in!

We've already received tons of exciting work. We've added a musicians page to feature some of the musicians we especially like. You can find this gallery by clicking the link above labelled "Musicians."

Look for a gallery page of the artwork we've received coming soon. To tide you over until then:

Introducing one of my favorite art submissions by Eva Montealegre. Eva is, among other things, painter, sculptor, director, and teacher based in Topanga, California. She describes herself and her work on her website:

"The universal constant of light creates a dance of color and form that manifests in a dreamlike conveyance of everything from whimsy to drama. I'm interested in the spirit andour connection to earth, to animals, to places and the science of love and healing."

You can find out more about Eva Montealegre at her site: http://www.evamontealegre.com/

More updates to come. Keep coming back to see some more magic.

First Submissions - Laura Larson

The submissions to whatistheorigin.com have been rolling in and some truly astounding work has surfaced. This experiment is going splendidly so far thanks to the generosity of some gifted artists out there in the ether. I thought I'd use this space to share the work of one of our first contributors.

Laura Larson has been working as a Los Angeles based visual artist for over 30 years. In the last 10 years she has completed 6 public art pieces and have had 6 solo shows.

She is currently working on a sculptural installation for the Brand Library Art Gallery for February 2011. The piece, which is called The Campaign, deals with the opposing ways of viewing the nature of reality as: scientific way of thinking vs. nature as a minded entity. Sounds like an eerily fine fit for HYPERBOLE:origins, wouldn't you say?

You can find more of her art at LarsonArt: http://larsonart.net/

Spread the word. whatistheorigin.com is in full swing.
